August brought not only sunshine to Helston, but a milestone moment for the Helston Scale Model Group: our first-ever public event, hosted at the Helston Community Fire Station Open Day. And what a day it was.
From the moment the 'doors opened', the atmosphere was buzzing. The weather was glorious—bright blue skies, warm sunshine, and exactly the kind of day that brings the community together. Visitors poured in steadily, creating a fantastic turnout that exceeded our expectations.
Five of our club members were able to attend, each arriving with a wonderful and varied selection of builds. The diversity on display was a true reflection of what makes our group so enjoyable: different styles, different subjects, and different approaches, all united by the same passion for the hobby.
One of the clear crowd-pleasers was the Lancaster nose section—a striking piece that grabbed attention the moment people walked past our tables. And then, of course, there was Tea-Rex. Slowly but surely becoming a local (and increasingly wider!) celebrity within the modelling community, this quirky and creative build drew smiles and sparked conversations all day long. If there was an unofficial “most photographed model of the day,” Tea-Rex may well have taken the title.
Throughout the event, we spoke with families, hobbyists, curious newcomers, and plenty of children who couldn’t resist pointing out their favourite models. The interest and enthusiasm from the public were genuinely heart-warming, and it reminded us why sharing the hobby is so important.
For a first public outing, we couldn’t have asked for more. Great weather, strong community support, and a chance to showcase not just our models, but the spirit of the Helston Scale Model Group itself—welcoming, creative, and always ready for a bit of fun.
A huge thank you to the Helston Community Fire Station for hosting such a wonderful event, and to everyone who stopped by our tables. We’re already looking forward to the next opportunity to share our work with the community.
