If there’s one thing we’ve learned about outdoor events in Cornwall… it’s to expect absolutely anything.
Helston Scale Model Group had the pleasure of joining the fantastic Camborne Pond Hoppers for their Summer Open Day at Coronation Park Boating Lake—and it certainly started with a bang. Or more accurately… a monsoon.
The morning kicked off with rain of biblical proportions. The kind that makes you question your life choices, your footwear, and whether building an ark might be a sensible side project. But, in true Cornish fashion, just as we were contemplating growing gills, the skies cleared—and right on cue around 11am, the sun made a very welcome appearance.
And it stayed.
From that point on, it turned into an absolutely cracking day. The lake came to life, the crowds arrived, and the atmosphere lifted faster than a badly glued wing under a hairdryer.
As always, our HSMG members did us proud, putting on a fantastic display of models that really showcased the variety and talent within the group. From American Civil War pieces full of history and detail, right through to local Culdrose helicopters that brought things a little closer to home—there was something for everyone to admire (and plenty of “how did you do that?” moments throughout the day).
A huge thank you, as always, to the Camborne Pond Hoppers for having us along and putting on another brilliant event. Their displays never disappoint, and the boating lake setting—once it dried out—was the perfect backdrop.
All in all, a day that started soaked but finished in sunshine, smiles, and superb modelling.
We’ll take that every time.
