Well, if this is how 2026 is going to behave, we’ll take it.
Helston Scale Model Group officially launched into this year’s events with a fantastic day out, thanks to a kind invitation from the brilliant Camborne Pond Hoppers for their Spring Open Day—and what a cracking start it was.
First things first… the weather. Now, we all saw the forecast. Thunderstorms, heavy showers, the usual “best bring a boat” Cornish optimism. But somehow, the weather gods took pity on us. Not only did the storms hold off, but we were even treated to a cheeky spell of sunshine. Yes—actual sunshine. In Cornwall. During an event. We’re still processing it.
With the skies behaving themselves, Paul, Barry, David, Nick, and Al stepped up to put on a display that did HSMG proud. Tables were packed with a great mix of builds, from finely detailed pieces to models that had people leaning in for a closer look (and occasionally asking, “how on earth did you do that?”).
As always, the atmosphere was spot on—friendly, relaxed, and full of good conversation. There’s something about getting modellers together that just works. Whether it’s sharing techniques, swapping stories, or quietly judging each other’s glue choices… it all adds to the fun.
Of course, a big thank you goes to the Camborne Pond Hoppers for having us along and putting on their usual fantastic display. Boats, craftsmanship, and plenty of “that definitely shouldn’t float—but it does” moments. They never disappoint.
All in all, it was a brilliant way to kick off our 2026 events calendar. Great people, great models, and even better weather than we had any right to expect.
If this is the standard for the rest of the year, we’re in for a very good one.
