Helston Scale Model Group’s First Open Day: Glue, Glory, and a Splash of Pond Water

Well… we did it.

After weeks of planning, tinkering, and the occasional “where did I put that tiny part?” moment, Helston Scale Model Group officially threw open its doors for our very first Open Day—and what a day it turned out to be.

From the moment the doors opened, the place was buzzing. Tables were lined with everything from finely detailed scratch built American Civil War Ironclads to o;ive drab armour builds that looked like they’d just rolled straight off a battlefield (minus the mud… mostly). Our members were hard at work throughout the day, demonstrating builds, sharing tips, and occasionally pretending they definitely meant to glue that bit there.

One of the highlights was seeing visitors lean in close—really close—to inspect the details. There’s something quite satisfying about watching someone squint at a model and then look up with that “wait… that’s tiny?!” expression. We live for that.

Of course, no great event is complete without great company, and we were thrilled to be joined by the brilliant Camborne Pond Hoppers. As always, they brought along their fantastic display—boats, craftsmanship, and probably more water-related wizardry than we fully understand. Let’s just say if it floats, sails, or makes you go “how have they done that?”—they had it covered.

The atmosphere all day was exactly what we’d hoped for: friendly, relaxed, and full of people who just get it. Whether you’re a seasoned modeller or someone who still thinks superglue is a personality trait, there was something for everyone.

We also proved an important scientific fact:
You can never have too many models… but you can run out of table space.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, had a chat, asked questions, and supported us—it genuinely means a lot. And of course, a big shoutout to our members and the Camborne Pond Hoppers for putting on such a fantastic show.

If you missed it, don’t worry—we’ll be back. And next time, we might even remember to bring extra chairs.

Until then, keep building, keep creating, and try not to glue your fingers together.
